Chris Jericho | There Is No Failure If You Try

Chris Jericho returns for his seventh appearance on the Rock 30 on a weekend that carries a little extra meaning for LA Lloyd. The show airs the weekend after Lloyd’s birthday, which leads to an unexpectedly personal conversation about getting older, ageism and why neither of them has any interest in walking away from something they still love. Jericho says he has heard people tell him what he should and shouldn’t do his entire career, but if the work is good, the passion is still there and you’re happy doing it, there is no reason to stop. He also looks back at the years it took to truly find his voice in Fozzy and why success has never been about reaching one final destination.

I Know Evil

That philosophy carries into one of the most memorable moments of the conversation when Jericho explains why he doesn’t believe in failure as long as you are willing to try. A recent Anvil concert reminded him that “making it” can mean different things at different stages of life. Whether it is performing for 20 people or 50,000, if you are doing what you dreamed of doing and still moving forward, you are already succeeding. Jericho also talks about the difference between confidence and arrogance, the chemistry he has developed with Rich Ward and longtime collaborator Johnny Andrews, and why “I Know Evil” works best when the listener decides what the song means.

THE ART OF THE CONVERSATION

The conversation eventually turns into two longtime interviewers talking about the art of conversation itself. With Talk Is Jericho now more than a decade old, Jericho explains why he has turned down major guests when he wasn’t given enough time, why listening matters more than simply waiting to ask the next question, and why the best interviews happen when neither person knows exactly where the conversation is going. He also talks about his KISS tribute project Kuarantine, why rock and roll continues to survive every prediction of its death, the growth of Fozzy’s UK audience and why the band may never make another traditional studio album—even though today’s singles could eventually find a home together on vinyl.
